Description
Vitamin K1 injection contains phytonadion 10 mg and the mechanism of action of vitamin K is discussed in terms of a new carbanion model that mimics the proton abstraction from the gamma position of protein-bound glutamate.
This is the essential step leading to carboxylation and activation of the blood-clotting proteins.
Indication
Indicated in anticoagulant induced prothrombin deficiency caused by coumarin or indanedione derivatives;
- prophylaxis and therapy of hemorrhagic disease of the newbron;
- hypoprothrombinemia due to antibacterial therapy;
- hypoprothrombinemia secondary to factors limiting absorption or synthesis of vitamin K, e.g., obstructive jaundice, biliary listula, sprue, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, intestinal resection, cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, and regional enteritis;
- other drug-induced hypoprothrombinemia where it is definitely shown that the result is due to interference with vitamin K metabolism, e.g..salicylates.
Dosage and Administration
Doase for Hemorrhagic disease of newboron - for prophylaxis is 0.5-1mg IM within 1 hr birth , for treatment 1mg SC or IM
Adult - Prothrombin deficiency - 2.5mg-10mg or up to 25mg or dosage directed by the physician
